Light as a bridge between history and the present

The Haus am Schottentor, a neoclassical jewel in the heart of Vienna, underwent extensive revitalisation from 2018 to 2021. The goal was to preserve the historical substance while integrating modern uses such as an INTERSPAR store, dining facilities, and office spaces. The lighting should not only be functional, but also highlight the architectural magnificence and provide a modern shopping experience.

Lighting solution: Custom elegance for a heritage building

In close collaboration with the Bartenbach lighting design office, Zumtobel developed a lighting concept that respects the historical character of the building while simultaneously meeting modern requirements. Particular attention was paid to the faithful reconstruction of the historic pendant lights in the former ticket hall, which were equipped with modern LED technology. The glass ceilings were backlit with TECTON continuous-row lighting to create the impression of natural daylight.

Architecturally integrated lighting for maximum impact

VIVO II was used, among others, for accentuated counter lighting, SUPERSYSTEM and CARDAN evolution for flexible, architecturally integrated lighting solutions, and DIAMO and MICROS for subtle ambient lighting. SLOTLIGHT infinity with MiniCell reflectors ensures uniform light distribution, while the TECTON light line system atmospherically backlights the historic glass ceiling. CONTRAST 2 LED façade floodlights enhance the overall design with a subtle external impact.

Technology & Sustainability: Lighting Control with Responsibility

All luminaires were networked with DALI technology and integrated into a superior lighting management system that automatically adjusts to daylight conditions and visitor flows. With precise control, long lifespan, and high energy efficiency, the solution supports the sustainability goals of the project. Light isn't just used as a design tool here, but also as an active contribution to future viability and resource conservation.
