Zumtobel’s lighting solution for the new Building D follows a holistic concept for operating rooms, outpatient areas, and waiting rooms
LIGHTFIELDS III provides glare-free lighting from all angles for hallways, waiting areas, and examination rooms
Other highly specialized lighting systems for hospitals, such as SINUS and CLEAN II, are also in use
After three and a half years of construction, the largest hospital in Lower Austria, St. Pölten University Hospital, has opened a new 11-stories high hospital building with 1,384 rooms and 11 operating rooms on a total of 61,400 m². In addition to the technical rooms, a staff restaurant with approximately 400 seats has been built in the basement. Besides various specialist departments, the new building D also houses facilities for the Karl Landsteiner Private University on Level 8.
Zumtobel was commissioned to design a holistic lighting solution that combines functional precision with atmospheric quality. This solution meets the highest standards for hygiene, color rendering, and glare control and is used in operating rooms, lounges, outpatient areas, hallways, and the staff restaurant. The installation was primarily carried out by a consortium consisting of the electrical contractors Klenk&Meder and Schmied&Fellmann. The architectural firm Pfaffenbichler and the electrical planner IGTA were responsible for the planning. A total of 6,880 different luminaires were installed for general lighting, along with approximately 1,000 luminaires for emergency lighting.
Holistic lighting design concept for various applications
In healthcare, it is essential to use strong, precise light where accuracy is required, and soft, dimmable light where people rest and recover. Thus, the lighting supports both medical work and patient recovery. Zumtobel’s holistically designed lighting solution supports this approach through various lighting systems: the high-performance CLEAN II Supreme luminaire provides uniform and glare-free lighting in operating rooms and intensive care units, while LIGHTFIELDS III offers a balanced mix of diffuse and directional light in corridors, common areas, and examination rooms. SINUS LED luminaires are used in patient rooms. In intensive care areas, CLEAN II ceiling luminaires with special sandblasted and matte covers prevent unwanted reflections and glare.
The LIGHT FIELDS III luminaires utilize multi-layer micropyramidal optic (MPO+) that balances diffuse and directional light, evenly distributes LED points, and avoids multiple shadows. Thanks to reduced luminance at acute angles, there is no glare. Color temperature and intensity can be adjusted over a wide range. With an efficiency of 148 lm/W and an LED lifespan of 50,000 hours, the luminaires consume little energy and ensure sustainable use.
Special lighting solution for sterile environments
The CLEAN II luminaire family, designed for cleanrooms, features non-porous, antistatic glass or PMMA covers that prevent bacterial growth and are resistant to disinfectants, heat, chemicals, and steam. They also feature MPO+ technology for precise, glare-free, and shadow-free lighting with high color rendering, color temperature control, and dimming. Removable Light Engines with side lighting and the CLICK system enable maintenance-free installation and sterile replacement outside the room. The frameless, smooth design minimizes contamination and functions even in positive and negative pressure rooms.
Maximum flexibility for patient rooms
The SINUS series features LED modules that can be flexibly used for various situations such as reading, room lighting, examinations, or night lighting. Thanks to Human Centric Lighting, they allow the light to be adjusted to the time of day and thus also to patients’ internal clocks. The light and switches can be moved electrically to adapt to the current position of a bed. Thanks to high efficiency, longevity, and dimmability, the LED modules contribute to significant cost savings.
“We are proud of our new building and have succeeded in leveraging medical advancements and nursing innovations to enhance the safety of our patients and staff,” says the St. Pölten University Hospital Management.
“We have collaborated with St. Pölten University Hospital on previous projects. Therefore, we are particularly happy that our services and products, specifically designed for use in the healthcare sector, have won them over once again,”
confirms Sales Representative Martin Hasenberger from Zumtobel, highlighting the strong partnership.
With lighting solutions from Zumtobel, the new Building D has created a healing environment that provides maximum support for patients and enables medical staff to have optimal visibility and deliver effective care. Thanks to state-of-the-art technology, it reduces energy costs and thus contributes to the hospital’s sustainable operation.
