Lighting refurbishment for a masterpiece

The Kunsthaus Bregenz, designed by Peter Zumthor, underwent a comprehensive lighting modernisation in 2023. The goal was to reduce power consumption and optimise lighting — without altering the architectural aesthetics. Thanks to cutting-edge LED technology, the KUB has now reduced its previous electricity consumption by over 50%.

Perfect lighting for art

The new lighting adheres to Zumthor's original vision: a uniform, daylight-like light flow without disruptive shadows. A specialised lighting ceiling provides uniform illumination that can be individually dimmed – precisely tailored to suit each artwork and exhibition.

Innovative technology for historical structures

The listed luminaires on the ground floor have also been modernised. Specially developed LED modules with tunableWhite technology ensure the highest light quality while maintaining the classic design of the luminaires. The new lighting control system also allows for precise adjustment to various lighting atmospheres.

Precise accents with ARCOS III

For accent lighting, the KUB relies on the powerful ARCOS III zoomfocus spotlights. With flexible focus control and excellent colour rendering, they optimally enhance the presentation of artworks. The façade backlighting has also been modernised, ensuring that the Kunsthaus continues to present itself as a luminous, translucent entity.

Efficiency meets aesthetics

In addition to the improved light quality, the artworks benefit from conservation-friendly LED light without UV radiation. The precise lighting controls and reduced power consumption make the project a sustainable success. Or as Zumtobel says: "Non-standard is our standard."

The sustainable lighting solution is based on existing components and fits into existing installation points. Efficient LED boards save energy and offer the best light quality.
