A unique light art installation at the Arlberg

Skyspace Lech is a spectacular light installation by the American artist James Turrell, embedded in the alpine landscape of Vorarlberg. Initiated by the "Horizon Field" association, the project impressively unites art, architecture, and nature. The goal was to create a place that enhances the sensory perception of visitors and, through light, offers new perspectives on space, color, and the sky.

Light that opens the heavens – a performance that caters all senses

Zumtobel developed tailored lighting solutions for the Skyspace that optimally highlights its different spatial areas. The viewer's gaze is directed through an elliptical opening, towards the sky, while changing light colors result in entirely new perceptions. The lighting design supports the visual staging and enhances the emotional impact of the space.

A dark, oval room with luminous, violet lighting accents on the ceiling leads through a narrow passage to a green landscape. The futuristic lighting creates an atmospheric and soothing ambiance.

High-quality Zumtobel products for artistic staging

The following were used, amongst others: an amber LED strip with an RGB colour gradient as well as a tunableWhite strip. The system was enhanced with opal covers that provide smooth transitions in the light distribution. The lighting is managed by the LUXMATE DMX lighting management system – for precise and creative control of the atmosphere throughout the entire tunnel and lighting space.

Realization of high standards in technology and sustainability

Realizing this project in high-alpine terrain was challenging regarding the high technical requirements. Due to extreme weather conditions and temperature fluctuations, and needing to blend in with the natural surroundings, customized solutions were highly necessary. In close collaboration with Baumschlager Eberle Architects and with the background of decades of experience in lighting technology, Zumtobel developed an installation that is not only artistically impressive but also durable, energy-efficient, and robust.

Light is more than just illumination – it touches our senses, alters our perception, and creates space for emotional experiences.
